"Sucking up is an effective tactic," he all but purred. That wasn't the entirety of the reason, of course - he had been and still was more driven by fondness and affection, a desire to please that had very little to do with colder tactical reasoning, but admitting that out loud any more explicitly seemed... dangerous, somehow.
