[Child adventures!] Ancient times

They weren’t actually supposed to be outside of the palace grounds. Father and Mother both agreed, nine was too young, and Thor had only just started arms training. But Thor had wanted to ‘test his courage’ and apparently that didn’t just mean ‘leave the palace’, it had meant ‘leave the palace, take a skiff, go to island ruin with a door in it, far enough away that you could barely see the spires’.

It was exciting, yes! Still Loki was in trouble much more often than Thor, and he was deeply complicit in the escape thanks to a lot of illusions, was still nervous. Mostly about being blamed if something went wrong. “Did one of the guards tell you about this place?”

"You're not afraid that we're going to run into them, are you?" Clearly, Thor is not. "I'm sure that if I did run into one, I'd survive it easily, even if the pit were 100 feet deep with spikes half as long!"

[st_ratagem]

“No, just you. You’d throw me out so I didn’t get impaled.” Loki was absolutely sure of that much. It was a point they agreed on, if one of them was going to get impales by massive spikes, it was Thor.

Plus it would be easy, Thor was already holding on to him. “Right before a whole lot of fifty foot spikes go all the way through you.”

"That's right," Thor proclaims, clearly delighted that his brother was well aware that he would save him. He gives Loki's hand a tight squeeze.

"Okay," he says, slowing his pace as the two of them approach another split in the hall. "Your turn."

It was a little thing, but Loki was so used to Thor taking the lead that it felt ridiculously good to be the one to pick. Yes, it was only fair, but ‘fair’ wasn’t always a priority on either side when they played. (That was part of the fun.)

After due but brief consideration (his brother’s patience was far from legendary) Loki brought out his charcoal stick again and scribbled a mark on the left path. “This way.” Less chance of going around in a circle.

Since Loki asked him before, it was only fair that he shot his words right back at him, right?

"Why that way?"

[st_ratagem]

“If we turn right all the time we’ll just end up where we started.” Loki shrugged, as if it was so obvious. Because it was so obvious! “Wouldn’t be much of an adventure, would it, brother? ‘Ooooh we went into this dark and collapsing ruin and walked around In a big circle, oooh.’ I’m being helpful.”

"It's not like we couldn't backtrack, you know," Thor argues, clearly affronted by this very rational explanation. "Besides, we're going to eventually explore this whole place, anyway. Maybe not today, but sometime."

“We’re still going left. I picked.” Loki pointed at his charcoal scribble, as if that made the choice permanent somehow. Then he started walking and tugged on Thor’s hand. “Come on, brother!”

"I wasn't saying we weren't!" Thor says, giving the passage to the right a quick glance before following his brother down the left. "This place is starting to get boring." He kicks a little bit of rubble dismally. "I thought there'd be more excitement, more fighting, and more treasure."

And so far, there had been none of it.

“Well.” Loki stopped abruptly. It felt like he could think this through or keep walking, but not both. “If... if all the traps are set off or broken because other people, then... then it stands to reason everything else would be gone too. We have to deeper than where other people got to, that’s where things will still be.” Right? Yes, That all made sense.

[st_ormbreaker]

"Well then, we shouldn't be stopping, we should be moving faster!"

Thor tugs at Loki's hand, and when he doesn't immediately move, Thor lets go and immediately races ahead.

[st_ratagem]

"Hey!" Loki's initial inner response was don't leave me here! which wouldn't have done much to slow Thor when he was on the move. Fortunately, his second was to race after his brother, with the third occurring on the way: if there are still things deeper in, that could include traps.

He didn't try too hard to catch up. A few paces behind was better. Just in case.

As Thor runs carelessly by, he feels part of the ground below him shift, and then he hears a click. When he turns, it's just in time to see a series of darts race towards him.

They rip through his skin as easily as they rip through his clothing, and Thor is downed.

As before, Loki’s first reaction was not helpful: he shrieked like a small child. Right after that, he fell back a couple of steps to try and get out of the reach of the darts and shape shifted into something low enough to the ground that they passed over anyway. (A green snake with black eyes that would have been very familiar to Thor.)

After that he panicked a little. Thor was on the ground, he wasn’t moving, that was a lot of stabbing, and what should he do? Yes, he stabbed Thor a fair amount, but that was just fun, this wasn’t fun. Loki slithered over to his brother’s body, shifting back to himself only when he was sure the darts were gone.

What to do. What to do. He reached out gingerly to touch Thor’s throat. That was where the pulse was. Right? Yes. Pulse first. Or fourth or whatever. “Don’t be dead, brother. Thor. Please don’t be dead.”

As soon as Loki touches Thor, he immediately startles. Pain, deeper than any he's felt when his brother stabbed him races through him. With every beat of his heart, he can feel it, as if his entire body is pulsing in tandem with it.

The embarrassment is almost as pressing as the pain; he'd been so confident that he could handle anything that came at them, but the moment he stumbled into trouble, he was knocked down almost immediately.

It's that embarrassment that forces Thor to slowly pull himself back to his feet.

"I'm fine, Loki," he says, irritably, though the pain's as obvious from the look of him as it is in his voice.

“We should go. This was a bad idea.” It was her nearly terrifying that Thor could get knocked down, even if he got right back up. And it had to hurt, and, “You’re bleeding.”

"I'm fine," Thor insists sharply, though when he takes a step forward, it's with a stagger. "We should keep going."

[st_ratagem]

Loki grabbed for his brother’s hand. He was not about naked emotional manipulation when scared. And Thor was not fine, he was only on his feet by willpower. Mother hadn’t begun to teach Loki healing yet, but you didn’t have to be an expert to see. “Please, brother? What if the next thing really does kill you and I’m stuck here alone with it?”

"I'm not going to die," Thor insists. "I am Odinson."

[st_ratagem]

Loki tugged on Thor’s hand. “So am I! But you know I haven’t started training yet.” Knives and magic didn’t count, for whatever reason. “We should... we should....” Think! There had to be something!

Nothing. “You’re bleeding a lot. I never stabbed you this bad.”

[st_ormbreaker]

"So what?" Thor's frown is growing deeper by the moment; he can't stand the idea that his brother thinks he can't handle blood. "I'm going into battle in a few years and I'll probably bleed a lot more then."

Thor takes a breath so that he doesn't wince. It really does hurt. And logically, even he knows that they should go back, but his typical stubbornness prevents him from agreeing to it.

"Are you going to worry --" Another breath. "Are you going to worry about me then, too?"

“Yes!” Loki snapped, fear and worry about half-converted to annoyance verging on anger. “Because I’m not going to be there to tell you to see the the healers when you’re being stupid!” He wouldn’t be, either. For whatever reason, Father had declared that a few hours’ difference in age was enough that Loki had to stay a child a lot longer.

Mother was pleased about it, and Loki didn’t exactly mind more time with her learning things that didn’t involve being beaten to the ground, but it still rankled. What made Thor so special? Apart from the part where he was Thor.

"If you're that worried, then fine. Let's go back."

It's immediately clear that Thor isn't happy about it. He knows that Loki's right.

And he also knows that he doesn't want Loki to get hurt, either. That might happen if they keep pressing forward.

[st_ratagem]

Finally. Loki squeezed his brother's hand, then tugged it a little as he started to backtrack through the passages. "We can come back! Now that we know for sure there's stuff down here. Nobody sets traps for no reason." Well, Loki sometimes did, where 'no reason' equaled 'whim and curiosity'. "And I marked the floors, it'll be easy to get right back here."

Thor's trailing behind, even though he doesn't intend to; for some reason, his legs aren't working quite right as much as he tries to force them to. The few times his legs manage to follow his instructions perfectly, he feels a sharp pain race up his leg.

Still, Thor tries to keep up with the facade of I'm fine.

"You don't think they're going to fade, do you?"
